Jamaican Ministry

JAMAICA PARTNERS INTERNATIONAL MISSION EXPERIENCE

What Is The Ministry?

The program is a ten-day religious, cultural sharing, and work experience with a community in Jamaica. Team members interact with students and community members at Oberlin High School and Haggard Medical Clinic near Lawrence Tavern, in the mountains of Jamaica. The emphasis is on sharing. The people of this region are materially poor. Many folks farm the surrounding hills or work for low wages in Kingston. There is a great spiritual wealth in these people. We bring the material goods and they bring the spiritual. The result is that everyone benefits.

What Is Oberlin High School?

Situated in the mountains north of Kingston, Jamaica, Oberlin High School was established in 1946 by missionaries from Oberlin College in Ohio. As the high school has grown, a community has been built around it. The school serves 1800 students,
ages 12-17, and is funded by a partnership between the Jamaican government and the United Church of Jamaica and the Cayman Islands. The teachers' salaries as well as some school supplies, are paid by the Jamaican government, but the government does not fund new buildings or maintenance.

In 1992, as a result of efforts by many churches in the United States, a medical and dental clinic was constructed to serve the needs of the community. The clinic is staffed with a nurse, dental assistant, and a doctor who calls once a week.

What Will The Team Members Be Doing?

Projects are determined by the needs of the community and the skills of the team members sent from the U.S. Our group usually includes M.D.'s, dentists, an oral surgeon, chiropractor, pharmacist, several nurses, a computer systems analyst, and/or
construction workers. Churches within a 24 mile radius of the clinic will be sending local people for medical and dental treatment. It is anticipated that some team members will be sent to help at other clinics in the mountains. Many of the children in
the area have serious dental problems due to their diet which is heavy in sugar.

There are also opportunities for the team members to instruct and assist with high school classes in computer, business, music, agricultural science, English, math, and art.

How Can I Get Involved?

There are many ways to participate in this project. Some of the preparation includes collection supplies for school, medical, dental, and personal hygiene. Cash contributions are needed to help with construction materials, medical equipment, and school equipment and supplies. You may want to become a member of the team and gain hands on experience in this mission.
Everyone has a gift which can be used in Jamaica.

Contributions are tax deductible and can be sent to:

Prayer Ministries
Mission: The Prayer Ministries Team exists to support the body of Christ through intercession, assisted prayer, and prayer education.  Prayer will be lifted for various physical, spiritual, and emotional needs.

Intercessory Prayer Team meets on Tuesday at 4:45 p.m.

The Healing and Wholeness Team will study scripture, material, and practice to become more knowledgeable in prayer. They will host weekly Evening Prayers at 5:00 every Wednesday evening to pray with and / or for our congregation, the community, and the world.  Prayer requests and needs will be made known to the team through completing prayer request cards, verbally, and the church website.
The team will also host a study, called" Anointed to Heal" by the Eddings, starting the first Wednesday in January, between 6:00 and 7:00 p.m.

The Upper Room Prayer Line Ministry will continue intercessory prayer for the needs of people across the United States on the Second Thursday of each month between 7:00 and 9:00 p.m. Calls from the Upper Room in Nashville are diverted to our church on these Thursdays.

Prayer Chain continues to enlist volunteers who desire to pray for those in our congregation and community who may be experiencing sudden illness or crisis in their families.

Additional Information:
The Prayer Ministries Team will meet quarterly with the pastor and Ministries Staff of the Church.

EVENING PRAYERS
The Prayer Ministry team hosts evening prayers every Wednesday evening between 5:00 and 5:30. Everyone is invited to come worship with us during these services in the chapel as we intercede for our church and community.

Shut-in Visitation Ministry

The team's mission is to visit all those members of our congregation who are unable to come to church and would like to be visited.  Team members wish to convey to shut-ins love and the feeling that they continue to be a part of the body of Christ.

There are no formal meetings, but members of the congregation are invited to let the leader know of any new need so that this can be passed along to the entire team.

Scouting Ministry

A Scouting program, based on the Boy Scouts of America, for boys and their families is offered as one of the Youth Ministries of Lexington First United Methodist Church, These programs serve boys from 6 to 18 years of age.
