NetEase SMTP Blocking Information

NetEase only allows incoming SMTP request to authorized servers. Users that are found operating unauthorized SMTP servers will be disconnected immediately.

Effective 2/13/04 NetEase will additionally block all outbound SMTP request to networks other than our own. If you are using another service to send e-mail you must configure your mail client to use smtp.netease.net. This change has been implemented in an effort to prevent users from abusing services not under our control and to monitor any possible abuse caused by malicious trojans or programs designed to transmit spam.

If you are unsure of how to change your outgoing mail settings please contact the Help Desk at 888-463-8327 (845-5640 Local).

The policy of blocking outbound port 25 is becoming accepted as a standard for many Internet Service Providers. Earthlink, MSN and Cox Cable are just a few of the providers which have already implemented these blocks.

Why are you blocking my ability to send mail through another server?

As mentioned above, this will prevent malicious programs from abusing our Internet neighbors. This will also allow us to monitor outgoing mail and catch users that attempt to send spam from our network.

I need to send authenticated SMTP due to security regulations. What should I do?

Contact your mail administrator and inquire about using port 587 for secure SMTP authentication. If they are unable to do that have them contact us.

Where will my e-mail go when I send through NetEase servers?

Prior to sending transmitting your outgoing mail to the Internet, it is processed through our virus scanner. If your e-mail contains a virus or trojan it will NOT be delivered.

For more information concerning these measures please contact policy@netease.net.
