Getting rid of unwanted messages
E-mail today has become the fastest and most popular way to communicate with friends and colleagues. Whether you are using e-mail for work or personal use,
the ability to send a message and have a reply within minutes, has turned e-mail clients into the most used
productivity tools on the Internet.
There is always a down side
Unfortunately, e-mail is also associated with lots of unsolicited e-mail targeting millions of unsuspecting users. Through our filtering system here at NetEase,
the quantity of unsolicited e-mail averages about 75 percent of the total mail volume passed through our servers. Many of our customers are familiar with the suspect_spam
folder that catches sometimes thousands of messages daily. And we are also aware that a large number of unsolicited e-mails get through our filters and
unfortunately end up in the users Inbox. Rest assured we are constantly tweaking our filters to make up for this.
The large e-mails
Another down side to e-mail is the endless number of large e-mails that sometimes seem to bring our computers to a screeching halt. Whether is is several large pictures
sent by a relative or friend or a large video, there just seems to be times that these large messages are more of a inconvenience than anything else. Especially if
your computer or Internet connection becomes unusable when downloading these large messages.
A couple of ways that you can manage your messages before they become a problem
Web Mail is one way of removing large messages and unsolicited e-mail from your Inbox before you download them. Simply go to the NetEase home page
and log in to your web mail interface using your e-mail address and password. From there, click on your Inbox and then select the messages you want to delete by
clicking on them once. Hold the Ctrl key on your keyboard and select multiple messages.
HINT! Do this BEFORE you open your mail program such as Outlook Express or Windows Mail. If your mail program is downloading messages at the same time,
your mailbox is locked and will not allow you to delete messages from the Web Interface.
POP3 Checkers
Another simple solution for dealing with this problem is a good POP3 checker. What is that? In simple terms, it is a program that checks your mail before you open your
mail program. Allows you to select the messages you want to delete and then deletes the messages before you open your mail program.
One highly rated POP3 checker that we recommend is called POPTray. This is available as a FREE download at POPTray.org.
This program is very lightweight and simple to set up. You can set up multiple POP3 accounts and set it to check at specified intervals.
After you have downloaded POPTray, you will need a little information to set it up. If you are using a netease.net account, your incoming mail server, username and password
are needed.
The incoming mail server for netease.net is mail.netease.net
POPTray will use your default e-mail program to open your e-mail after it is installed.
Check the POPTray web site for additional information including screenshots and documentation on using this utility.
