Tackett's Infantry Company is of interest to Wayne County today because it gives insight and understanding of the people of the middle and southern sections of the county during this period. Tackett's Infantry Company was raised under the Tennessee Conscription Act of 1861. The act required all men between certain ages to report for militia duty to support and protect the state.
The company was gathered in Wayne County and marched to Nashville to be mustered into active service. The company was apparently partially mustered into service on 5 February 1862, but was ordered away from Nashville before the muster could be completed. This hasty departure was a result of the fall of Ft. Donaldson and Ft. Henry. The company was probably assigned to the 54th Tennessee Infantry Regiment as it was accepted by the same Confederate States mustering officer at the time and place as companies known to have been assigned to the 54th. It was probably company "D" or "F"; which one has not been determined . The remnants of the 54th were subsequently merged with the 48th (Nixon's) Tennessee Regiment in April 1862 and no susequent record of Tackett's company has been found.
What happened to these men? It seems that the men received no equipment or arms. Neither had they been given food or medical supplies. When ordered away from Nashville, they were forced to return to Wayne County, Tennessee the best way they could. Many of these men later joined the Union Army, including the company commander, Joseph W. TACKETT, indicating that many had been forced into the Confederate Army against their will.
The following roster has been compiled from the original military records on microfilm and from the Tennesseans In The Civil War. Additional information concerning subsequent Federal service is from Tennesseans In The Civil War and from pension records and Union company rosters.
The following letter appears as a part of the microfilm copy of the company roster:
This company was ordered away from Nashville where it was being mustered into service
before the muster could be consummated and this consequently is the only memorandum of the
muster of the company. I certify that I mustered the men on this memorandum roll into
service of which I have filed in the Adj. And Gen's Office. //s/T. O'HARA, Capt, C.S.,
Inf. Mustering Officer.
