Old Guestbook Entries

We started the Wayne County Genealogy and History Web Page Guestbook in December 1999. Due to being overwhelmed with Spam entries, the Guestbook was discontinued in August 2003. The valid entries to the Guestbook where salvaged and appear here.  Many of these entries are comments about the pages, but some of them contain query information. It was therefore decided to include the entire page in the Queries section. We hope that these entries will provide information that does not appear elsewhere in the pages.

I have been looking for My grandfather, My Dad was born in Alens creek tenn. in 1906 I found them in the 1920 census in Wayen co, went back to 1910 but they were not there, My Grandfather was in the 1930 censes in calif, where I live. so if anyone out there knows of a Pleasant Hardy Arnett that had four brother one was a James Arnett and he died in Savannah Tenn. and that he was a presbyterian minister. I have some pic. that I want to send to you, when I can, one is a pic take of the emplayees of Holthouse and Hartup taken in 1929. My grandfather is in the pic. I have two other pic. I know some of the people in the pic's but I would like to know more about them like, I use to come back to Waysnesboro with my folks, the last time I was there was Dec.1957. My Uncles brother lived there and my Aunts cousin lived there, they both were born there. maybe where they were taken.

Several years ago, I did a lot of research on my Jones Family from Wayne County, TN My great grandfather, Daniel H. Jones, was sheriff in Wayne County after the Civil War. On your list of Wayne County Sheriffs, you have David H. Jones, sheriff for 2 years, 1876-78. Please check the original documents. The name should be Daniel H. Jones. I would love to hear from you on this. Also, my great, great grandfather, William Jones, was Clerk of Wayne County before the Civil War. Could you please give me information on the dates of his term in office or any information that you have on him. I have enjoyed reading all of the information that you have on Wayne County. Thank you. Barbara Jo Floyd

Hoping to find someone with information. In a group of letters that my Grandfather wrote to my Grandmother, before they were married, on June 19, 1890 he commented on the fact that the new school was to be built in Flatwoods, and that it was to be built between Mr. Whitaker and Tom Graves. He said 'the boom has struck Flatwoods.' On Nov. 10, 1890, he wrote that he had been subpoenaed as a witness in the lawsuit over the plans for the new school. Anyone have the history on this?

Hi, my name is David, and I've got some information tnat may be of interest to some, and because I'm not real fast with typing,I will need some of your patience. My Grandfather was Sam Bromley, and he was born in Wayne Co. over one hundred years ago,so if there any Bromley's around that would have some info concerning his family,it would be appreciated. Samuel McDonald Bromley was born at Flatwoods,TN ca 1878. He married Mary Elizabeth Whitworth, July 23,1899. That's all, except that they were together until he died Jan.12,1956. Of course, along the way they several children. I don't have the whole list, just the ones I remember. Beulah Pearl,1904 -198_, Lily,1907-1973,J.T.Who passed early,at age 12,I believe. Mary Helen, my mother,Dec.27,1919,at Enloe,Tx.She married Tella Wilson, in Oct.11,1939 . Anyway, that's about it, except Grandma, passed away May 8,1974 as I was getting out of the Army.

It was nice to look at your site, for historical purposes I can trace my heritage to Tennessee while it was still part of the Kentucky Territory. My ancestor was in the revolutionary war as a guard to General Washington and was given as a pension ~200 acres of land in what later became Scott County Tennessee ( I was born there in 1955), if you look at their site they will show the original settlers (Joseph Griffith my ancestor was one). I do have a favor to ask if and when you get time, I collect old Studebakers and I have a 1949 Champion that when I tracked the original production order from the Studebaker museum it listed Waynesboro Tennessee as the destination site. At one time Waynesboro or the nearby area must have had a Studebaker dealership. My car is a 1949 but I would imagine that it would have been there still into the early or mid-1950's at least. Would you have any old pictures or records that might list this dealership? The car ended up being purchased in 1979 in Jackson Tn. by a professor that later moved to Michigan where it stayed in a barn until I purchased it. Any help that you can give would be greatly appreciated, I don't know if the vehicle serial number would help you(not sure they keep records on cars that long) but if you think it might I can send that to you. But if the only thing I end up with is the name of the dealership that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Claude Griffith

Just found your site. The comments about Wayne Co. sound so good, I am ready to pack my bags and move there! Felt a spiritual kinship with those having relatives from Wayne Co. as my great great great grandfather, John Balentine and wife Sarah lived in Wayne Co. and my grandfather and grandmother were born there. Also related to Holt, and Fowler on my grandmother's side. There are also Coopers, and Tilleys in the line, as well as Darby, Straggs, and others.

Just wanted to drop you line and thank Mr. Murphy for deed information he sent to me on Willis & Wesley Copeland and John Linn/Lynn. It was helpful in the respect I learned John's wife's maiden name was Lineberry. I still haven't solved my mystery on who Wesley's parents were, but I'll keep checking in on your site. I also appreciate the info Edgar Byler III submitted on the difficulties of getting early records for the county. You all have a great site. Thanks for help. Becky Schlaegel

Nathaniel MARTIN (c1821-1896) born Martin's Mills (Wayne County) Tennessee and died on Cave Creek (Newton County) Arkansas was my maternal great grandpa. I published MARTIN LETTERS which includes letters written for or by him (after he learned to write) to his son, Samuel Nathaniel MARTIN, by his first wife, Leah MARTON, and letters written to Sam's daughter, Aggie (later EGAN), by my mother, Walcie MARTIN, then DEAN, in the 1920's. Also included are old maps, excerpts from letters sent and received in my research efforts. The book is out of print. I had the pleasure of meeting some of my MARTIN kin in Wayne and McNairy County, TN, and in Florence (Lauderdale County) Alabama. I would love to find a proveable connection between the immigrant HORTON and my immigrant MARTIN who are said to have stowed away on a ship to America and served in the Revolutionary War together. I found HORTON's service record but no mention of my MARTIN.

edgar & jerry: I am new at the internet and so happy to find the wayne county historical society. Several years ago I wrote you as my mother and her family were from Collinwood. My g-father & g-mother are buried at McGlamery cemetary. I"m trying to find the indian relatives that were from N.C.and migrated to Collinwood. The names are JKP Daniels, Lot Daniels, Plumer Daniels and back to William Daniels Sr. & Jr. Their wives are Mary Elizabeth (Sis) Butler, Catherine Brewer, Ann Bennett, Nancy Dannelly(Danley)Minnie Bryant, letha daniels darnell, ada daniels horton, my uncle Jasper William (Jap) daniels wife was a Mattye Featherstone. There are more relatives but i can't find the thread that ties them to the Indians that were in that area at the time. Any help would be appreciated. If you would like some information that I have, let me know. Many thanks!! Billie cates

I am a soldier and journalist currently stationed in Wuerzburg, GE, who has recently begun doing research on my family history. I have found that there is a large concentration of Stockards located in Wayne County, Tennessee. I have uncles by the names of, Howard Stockard (TN), and Donald Stockard (UT), and my father is Kenneth Stockard, originally from Wayne County. My late paternal grandparents were Herman Stockard and ("Willie") Ruth Stockard. I don't know many of my family past that, but I'd like to. We used to have reunions in Davy Crockett Park in Tennessee. That's all I can remember. If you have any info or could assist me in learning more about my family, please e-mail me. Thanks.
