#152 Whitten's Cross Roads (Pleasant Point) Cemetery

LOCATION: On the Northwest corner of the intersection of Wilson Road, Wright Ridge Road, George Olive Road, Little Cypress Creek Road and Gallion Road, across Little Cypress Creek Road from Whitten's Crossroads (Pleasant Point) Methodist Church

This cemetery was listed in Wayne County, Tennessee Cemetery and Death Records, as #152, Whitten Quadrangle. The survey therein published was done in 1971. Between the date of the survey and the publication of the cemetery book, the survey underwent several revisions and transcriptions during which many listings were dropped. This resurvey was done to correct those errors. The resurvey was done 11 March 1989 by Edgar D. Byler, III

The resurvey below was conducted row by row, grave by grave, beginning in the southeast corner of the cemetery, at BM 941 (942) Nashville.

Update 4 June 2007 by David Leon Montgomery who gave the following geographic location and directions:
Lat: 35° 03¢ 49² N, Lon: 87° 43¢ 45² W

To reach this cemetery from Collinwood, Tennessee, travel Tennessee Hwy. 13 south for approximately 6 miles. Turn right (west) onto Wilson Rd. and go about 3.1 miles to the five-point intersection of Wilson Rd., Little Cypress Creek Rd., George Olive Rd., Wright Ridge Rd. & Gallien Rd. The cemetery is across Little Cypress Creek Rd. from the Whitten Crossroads Methodist Church.

The Oak Grove Cemetery is in south central Wayne County, Tennessee. To reach the cemetery, from Collinwood, Tennessee, travel State Hwy. 13 south for approximately 11.6 miles. Turn right (west) onto Pumping Station Rd. (TN Hwy. 227) and go 3.1 miles. Turn right (north) at the crossroads just past the automobile salvage yard. Go about 50 yards and turn left down Oak Grove Church Road, a narrow winding paved road. This cemetery is owned and maintained by the Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church and is very well taken care of. The cemetery is on the north side of the church. Josiah Fowler was the founder of Oak Grove cemetery as noted on his head stone. The following survey has been checked for accuracy of names & dates. All information has been taken from head and/or foot markers. I completed this survey on Oct 26, 2003. - David Montgomery

To reach the Friendship Cemetery, travel south from Collinwood, Tennessee on State Hwy. 13 for approximately 11.6 miles. Turn right (west) onto Pumping Station Rd. (TN Hwy. 227) and go 3.1 miles. Immediately upon passing an automobile salvage yard. Turn right (north) and the cemetery is on the right side of the road about 60 yards after turning.

This cemetery has 49 graves marked only with white concrete crosses, all unknown. There are 54 unknown graves total. The cemetery grounds are somewhat neglected.

This cemetery was adjacent the old Friendship Baptist Church which was established about 1830. Rev. Peter Satterfield (Sutterfield) was one of the early ministers.  The Church was moved and renamed Oak Grove in 1867 due to a conflict with a neighboring property owner.

In addition to the above graves there are several probable burials in this cemetery.

#156 Whitten's Chapel Cemetery
(Old Mt. Bethel Methodist Church Cemetery)

Lat: 35° 03¢ 12² N, Lon: 87° 41¢ 28² W

Additional Information: Mt. Bethel Methodist Church was established at this location in 1836. The church continued in existence until 1892 when the congregation split. One group joined the Pleasant Point (Whitten's Crossroads) Methodist Church about 2½ miles to the north while the remainder of the congregation moved south about 2½ miles and founded Pleasant Springs (Railroad) Methodist Church. The old log church building stood for many years and was last used as a barn. A cemetery trust fund for the care of this cemetery was established in 1986. (information from Edgar D. Byler, III)

To reach the Whitten’s Chapel Cemetery from Collinwood, Tennessee, travel Tennessee Highway 13 south for approximately 11 miles. Turn right (west) onto Wilson Road and travel about .6 miles. There is a Whitten’s Chapel Cemetery sign on the side of the road. Turn right (north) on a narrow dirt road into the woods and go about 75 yards to the cemetery.

It is in a wooded area. The cemetery has at least 47 graves marked only with fieldstone. One grave is marked with a large stack of rocks. It has an inscription on one rock but it is near impossible to read. This cemetery has large trees grown up in it. One stone is leaning due to a tree growing beside it. Mr. C.E. “Jeff” Whitten, who lives near, told me that there was once a church nearby. It was built of logs with no windows, only shutters to open or close over the openings. It decayed away many years ago.

Cedar Grove Cemetery is located off TN highway 227 in Wayne County. To reach the Cedar Grove Cemetery, turn east off highway 13 onto highway 227 and travel 1 mile. Turn left and travel 1.5 miles and the cemetery is on the left of the road in front of and beside the church.

#168 Girls Grave

LOCATION: To the southeast of Gallion Road, about ½ mile west of TN Highway 13. The grave is located on the top of a hill beside the stump of an tree. Information provided by Leland Gallien who stated that the young girl died while a family was traveling through the area and was buried where the family had been camped. No otaher information available.

#170 Butler Grove Cemetery

The Butler Grove Cemetery is located off Railroad Bed Rd. in Wayne County, Tennessee. To reach the cemetery, travel east on Railroad Bed Rd. for approximately 2.2 miles and turn right at the Butler Grove Church sign. Go about 3.57 miles and the church is on the left. The cemetery lies to the right and up the hill from the church. It also extends behind the church somewhat.
